Our church was looking for an HVAC technician to keep on retainer for all their HVAC needs.
- I didn’t know if I wanted to let them know I was an HVAC technician.
I worried that if I told them I was an HVAC technician, I would be obligated to work on their HVAC equipment, even if I was on another HVAC job for the HVAC company I worked for. I hoped my wife didn’t say anything to them, but I should have known better. When we got out of church, she asked me if I had considered working for the church. I asked her not to say anything because I didn’t want to be held hostage by the church. They may get upset if they needed an HVAC technician and I didn’t show up immediately. She asked if they may be thinking about paying a full-time wage and I could work exclusively for them. I reminded her how often the church was begging the congregation to give until it hurts because they had so many people to help. I was afraid they would ask me to work when I was already on a job. My wife thought about what I said, and she agreed with me. I only hoped my parents didn’t say something to the minister. The following week, I got the answer to whether they had said something. The minister approached me and asked why I didn’t volunteer that I was an HVAC technician. I told him I worked for an HVAC company and I couldn’t afford to do outside work, because it would be a conflict of interest.
