The kitten was sleeping on the furnace.

I told the HVAC technician where the furnace was and told him to take care of things.

I was working on baking a birthday cake and didn’t have time to show him.

I heard him calling for me about fifteen minutes later. I opened the door and asked if everything was okay? He asked if I had a couple of minutes, and said he needed me to come downstairs. When I got to the furnace room, he was pointing at the top of the furnace. There was our kitten, hissing and ready to scratch the HVAC tech’s eyes out, if he came any closer. I walked up to the kitten and put my hands out. She moved into my hand and snuggled up like I was her mommy. He said the kitten had jumped on top of the furnace like it was her bed, and she was hissing the entire time. She took possession of the furnace and wouldn’t let the HVAC near. After about fifteen minutes, Scuttle was back where she felt comfortable, and the furnace was working properly. I thanked him for being kind to the kitten and calling me before chasing her away. I told him we found her in a dumpster and she was afraid of men in uniforms. She must have associated the HVAC technician with someone who had dropped her in the dumpster. Before the HVAC technician had gone over the bill for the furnace repair, Scuttle was warming up to him. She curled up on his lap and didn’t want to move when it was time for him to move.
