A power surge damages my air conditioner during a hurricane

I thought that I had ridden out the most recent hurricane to hit this state relatively unscathed.

I am happy that we were not directly hit head on by this category 4 storm, but it passed by quite close anyway.

Close enough for us to experience wind speeds of 50 mph with gusts up to 70mph! Flooding was extensive, but we are far enough from the coast and on slightly elevated ground, so it wasn’t as bad in our area. That being said, the water was up to about 7 inches in my neighborhood! We ended up losing power early in the evening, and it was not restored until about 2 and a 1/2 days later. I remember the lights and my fan rapidly turning on and off before finally there was darkness and silence. I had not guessed that there had been extensive damage to the wiring of my HVAC system. To my great dismay, a full week after the power had already been restored, My air conditioner system gave out on me. It was working poorly and then it simply stopped working all together. When the HVAC man took a look, he surmised that a power surge had damaged some of the electrical components of the HVAC system, including the capacitor, which had eventually blown. It’s a rough situation to be in, because I was sure that we had made it out okay, and then this happens! I am now talking with the HVAC company about whether or not it will be more or less expensive to simply purchase an entirely new unit.
