I love both of my parents to death, but they’ve always been really quirky and unique.
They’re not from this country and both immigrated here a few years before having my siblings and I.
They had to learn how to assimilate into American culture to some extent. It wasn’t an immediate process for them. However they were able to find a small community of people like them who were immigrants from other countries. It’s interesting though because a lot of these people are all from different countries and we’re all from the same continent either. But what they shared was the struggle of trying to assimilate into this culture that seemed foreign to them while they seem so foreign to the people here. It made sense to me though for a while that my parents really didn’t like air conditioning or the concept of it. It was a luxury in the country they came from while it’s pretty much considered a necessity by a lot of people here. Air conditioning is so ubiquitous these days that almost everybody has access to it. I elderly parents claim they would never use air conditioners, but now as they get into their old age they’re starting to use them more and more. I’m actually happy that my parents are using the air conditioner in their house, especially during the summer. They can’t risk getting overheated just because they don’t like the idea intellectually of using air conditioning. It’s not like they’re acting like their bourgeoisie or something. They’re like any other random person from this country.
