My sister is one of those people who tends to try to figure things out… For as long as I can remember she has been known to take things apart just to see how they worked, but she has consistently been interested in going to museum that feature early technology, so when they had an exhibit on Heating & A/C system she wanted to go.
I decided to tag along so that she wouldn’t have to go alone & I was pleasantly surprised how fascinating it was. The area of the exhibit that intrigues me the most was the development of cooling system. Today this is a feature that my good friend and I take for granted & it is found in most homes & almost all businesses, hospitals, & even shopping malls, did you ever stop to guess where it all started? I hadn’t until I went to the exhibit with my sister… Not surprising, the inventor of the earliest cooling systems was both a physician & an inventor. Is primary goal in developing this technology was to lessen the spread of diseases throughout hospitals. This came about in the 1750’s which surprised me because there were no electrical components available at that time. The only way people had to cool a room was to use giant chunks of ice. The earliest cooling systems could have run by using either wind or steam powered compressors. These early compressors eliminated the need to transport ice from one location to the other because they could produce it on site, and even though it’s concept was developed that early it did not come to fruition until much later. I believe you never know what you will learn when you explore new things.
