Don’t mess around with the HVAC equipment

So I’m a bit embarrassed by how empowered I’ve become due to all the videos that I can access online.

Any time I have a question or need to diagnose a problem and fix it when it comes to stuff around the house, I jump on the computer.

Spending like a half hour inside the central air conditioning watching instructional videos has made me way overconfident about my skills. This is from a guy who could barely figure out how to change the air filter for the HVAC equipment when we first bought this house. I’ve never been exactly mechanically inclined. But I never gave up on it either. For sure, the learning curve that comes with homeownership has been beneficial. At least these days, I’m not afraid of tackling a project and the online videos have been such a big part of that newfound confidence. Yet, like I said, I’ve slipped into some stark overconfidence lately and the experience with my heating and cooling equipment has been a reality check. I hate that it had to be such an expensive reality check though. When I came home to find the HVAC unit running but no cooling coming from the air ducts, I went straight to my laptop. But I should have gone straight to the phone and called the HVAC professionals for help. Instead, spurred on by this overconfidence, I thought I could diagnose and then fix the air conditioning issue. Of course, heating and cooling equipment are meant to be worked on by only HVAC professionals. And honestly, I knew that. Still, I did my online video thing and then tried to fix the cooling problem. That move cost me hundreds of dollars more than if I had just called the HVAC company because I just made everything worse.
