My entire life, I have absolutely loved big storms.

I don’t know what it is about pounding rain, ringing thunder, and flashes of brilliant lightening, but I’m completely entranced by these big weather events.

I enjoy sitting out, watching the trees bend, and feeling tiny in the immense power of the storm. I also love sleeping peacefully at night, with the sheets of rain lulling me into a deep slumber. I’ve never experienced a large thunderstorm that I didn’t appreciate… until last month. Our region quickly transitioned from bitterly cold winter to hot and humid summer, with very little time in between. With this enormous air quality change, so came a huge series of tumultuous storms. I was in heaven, basking in the sounds and sights… until the air conditioning quit. All of a sudden, there was a huge gust of wind, a loud crash, and the house began to feel quite stagnant. I went to the thermostat to investigate, and found that the air conditioning unit had gone offline. Peering out back into the darkness, I saw our AC unit hidden beneath a large limb when the next flash of lightning lit up the yard. Fantastic. It was so brutal outside that we couldn’t even venture out to investigate the central cooling system damage. We thought that was going to be a terrible expense, but had no idea what else was coming our way. With another huge gust of wind, a large limb fell onto the side of our house, crushing the west wall and bringing the air ducts down with it. Not only did we gain a huge insurance claim and home construction project, but our entire central cooling system and huge portion of our air ductwork had to be replaced in the wake of the storms.

I’m about to talk about something we all hate. Doctor’s offices. Why are medical offices the least pleasant places on earth? It makes no sense to me that they seem to be purposely uncomfortable, to the maximum degree. It seems obvious that if you’re visiting a doctor in the first place, you probably already aren’t doing your best. Why, then, do they make the waiting room cold, dry, and silent? Why are examination rooms hard, fluorescent, and freezing cold? I’ve heard the theory before that the environment is created to establish a sense of sterilization and safety, and supposedly the cold indoor air is used to reduce bacterial growth. I’m not certain how effective this measure is for controlling air quality and airborne contamination. Bacteria can grow in an immense range of temperatures and environmental conditions, and there are undoubtedly plenty of strains floating through the air that don’t mind the 60 degree thermostat setting. If we’re talking about other sources of illness and airborne contamination, don’t even get me started on mold spores and viruses. They are highly resistant to temperature challenges, and are largely unaffected by these air temperature strategies. I would argue that these tiny friends are more dangerous than bacteria, as well as being too tiny to catch with traditional AC and furnace air filters. That’s why I recommended to my doctor’s office that they invest in a media air cleaner system as soon as possible. With proper HVAC equipment, they can actually filter tiny microbial contaminants from the indoor air, providing their clients and staff with superior air quality and continued health. Despite my working history in cellular biology, the doctor was not grateful for my suggestion.

This past weekend we were out of town, hitting the road and travelling great distances, as usual. This is no unusual event for us; it seems like we’re always in the car these days, driving thousands of miles for gigs, university tests, and friendly visits. All that being said, you would think that I’d be able to figure out the temperature control situation at home when we’re gone. For the longest time, I simply forgot to adjust the thermostat before we walked out the door. In all the hustle and bustle of packing and loading the car, I would rightfully forget to walk down the hallway and turn down the air handling equipment. Then, I would remember halfway through the trip that the AC was still set to 68 degrees or the furnace was still blasting away. After that, I simply felt guilty and anxious about the energy I wasted, and the trip would suffer from my negative energy. That’s why my husband finally had a smart thermostat installed in our home, to circumvent this guilt. Suddenly, I had the ability to adjust the indoor air temperature from anywhere! Whenever I remembered that our HVAC system was still pumping away at home, I could easily modify the thermostat settings and reduce my anxiety. Well, that was a really great improvement to our home energy expenditure and HVAC plan… but it only works if this idiot can figure out how to use it properly. Last weekend, I thought I was turning the AC down in our absence, but I was really cranking up the heat to 75 degrees. When we got back into town, our house was scalding hot and our energy bill was quite impressive.
