I used to have no idea what winter was about.
I wasn’t even close. Having grown up in the South, where only a heat pump was needed for heating, I had a fanciful idea of what winter was. It was like those Christmas cartoons when I was young, with fluffy snow and sledding and such. The truth about the temperatures had no bearing on how I envisioned a northern winter. That changed when I learned the truth, and it was a wake-up call for me. My wife’s mom lives in the North. She is at the point where she needs more care, so staying in the South was not an option for us. So, when my wife was offered a job that put her less than an hour from her mom, it seemed like a no-brainer. I support my wife on this. I work from home, so I can work anywhere. Living up here is temporary, and I’ll get back to my heat pump and air conditioning in the summer. Until then, I have to figure out just how to heat our home without spending a fortune. With the help of some wonderful neighbors, I learned the answer. Make sure your home is insulated. With no drafts, it’s easy to control the temperature. This is our third winter here.
