My journey with physical therapy

I was out of bed, but still limited to the bedroom for a while, until we were ready to take our first trip to the gym

When I was in high school some pals of mine were partying. We were driving around in a pickup truck drinking beer late at night. There were four of us in the bed of the truck, and at this point we were all pretty wasted… including the driver. He took a turn too quickly, and the truck went into a ditch. Upon impact, all of us in the bed of the truck went flying. No one else was badly hurt, but I damaged my spine. Ever since then, for the last ten years, I have worked with a personal trainer to try and rehab my damaged back and legs. At first I had to do a workout program from my bed, and after a few weeks I could stand up. Over the next few months my personal trainer adjusted my workouts gradually, taking advantage of my newfound mobility. I was out of bed, but still limited to the bedroom for a while, until we were ready to take our first trip to the gym. It’s funny to think about now, but the first trip to the gym was just a tour so I could familiarize myself with the place. I was too tired from the tour to actually workout while I was at the gym that first time! I have improved a lot since then, and while I still check in with my personal trainer once a week, I usually go to the gym by myself. I would probably not use a personal trainer at all, but we have grown very close over the years.
