I went to work each day, watched TV, and slept soundly during all the moments in between, unaware there was something else extremely important that I needed to do! I’m not the smartest person I know, and I don’t pretend to be. When other people are looking for advice or opinions on something, I shrug my shoulders and tell them I’m unqualified to offer any assistance. I don’t ever want people to get the bright idea to listen to what’s in my brain. This is one of the reasons I didn’t know anything about it when my partner kept telling me I had horrible allergies. I assumed the coughing, sneezing, and face rubbing for a few months, was normal, because of the changing seasons. Unfortunately, though, when the air conditioning began to be used, I started sneezing again. It took a professional respiratory specialist to tell me what the problem was – not allergies, but the amount of debri floating in my air ducts! Growing up, I never had to learn how to do anything, really. Father took care of the entire house, including the regular chores. I wasn’t responsible for anything until I left and was forced to learn what being a “real adult” was. I wish that I had learned a lot earlier the best ways to do things! I wish I had learned how to take care of my belongings. This is one of the reasons I’m kneeling here; I’m freezing, completely cold, without a way to manage my indoor air temperature. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had an HVAC plan before. I had a full, temperature-controlled, forced air furnace and central cooling system in my home, and I never liked it. Honestly, no one ever told me that I should. Instead, I figured touching the temperature control would change the indoor air temperature, and the rest just worked itself out! Now, as an adult, I know there’s critical work to perform on HVAC. Unfortunately, I found this out too late, when the HVAC system completely broke down. How my wife ever fell in love with me has always been a bit of a mystery to me.
She’s amazing in so many ways! That’s not how I would describe myself, but everything has worked out and we are very happy, 15 years into our marriage. That says everything. However, in that effort to win her over all those years ago, I almost killed my heating and cooling system. It’s a strange story, for sure! We met at work right out of college. Without much money, and no dating skills, I just did the best I could. And for me, that was going with some old school perceptions. So, I won her heart with home-cooked candlelight meals. The first time I cooked for her, I made it casual except for the lit candles on the supper table. For some reason, she loved it! Now, I understand she enjoyed how authentic and tranquil I was with her. I thought it was the candlelight, so I poured it on from there. What I didn’t realize then was how bad that was for my heating and cooling system! You see, all that burnt wax in a small apartment builds up on an air filter in a hurry! After a few dinners, the air filter was covered with a solid sheen of candle wax.

We were able to do this while working and taking classes from our air-conditioned home. The pandemic, of course, caused our financial straits. Straits isn’t an accurate description because we still had tasks. Had we not been able to work from home, in air conditioning, my wife and I would have absolutely been in financial straits. Still, our spending had to go down dramatically. We were able to save a lot on entertainment – there wasn’t any. No trips or movies or going out to eat. Saving that cash helped. We also tightened the belt in other ways. In the middle of the summer, though, a problem caused me to come up with a ridiculous idea. We noticed the heating and air conditioning system wasn’t keeping up. The heat pump was running constantly and couldn’t keep up. I thought I could fix it myself after watching online videos. I convinced myself I could recharge the refrigerant. How I got so confident in my HVAC diagnosis skills is beyond me! Thankfully, my wife shut that down furiously. She knew better than to trust our fancy Heating & Air Conditioning component to a guy who watched an online video. She called the Heating & Air Conditioning supplier. We spent the money on a normal repair call.

I’m trying to do better when it comes to finishing tasks around the house. This doesn’t come naturally for me. That’s a shame, because I had the chance to learn about being handy when I was a kid. My dad could repair just about anything around the house. He never fooled with the HVAC, though; he left that to the professionals. But, he was always on top of the HVAC chores, as second nature for him. He didn’t have to even know HVAC systems completely. He worked on them while handling other projects around the house. That’s not how it is for me. I need to set a reminder on my phone in order to change the air filter. Even then, I’m not consistent with it. I’m trying to get better. I made a great move by contacting our HVAC company. Signing us up for the HVAC maintenance plan takes the job off for me. Now, I don’t have to remember to schedule an appointment in the fall and spring. I’ve also remembered to change the air filter six months in a row. That could be a record! I’m doing my best when it comes to maintaining my heating and cooling equipment.
It’s good to be warm but not pay too much for heating and cooling
I used to have no idea what winter was about.
I wasn’t even close. Having grown up in the South, where only a heat pump was needed for heating, I had a fanciful idea of what winter was. It was like those Christmas cartoons when I was young, with fluffy snow and sledding and such. The truth about the temperatures had no bearing on how I envisioned a northern winter. That changed when I learned the truth, and it was a wake-up call for me. My wife’s mom lives in the North. She is at the point where she needs more care, so staying in the South was not an option for us. So, when my wife was offered a job that put her less than an hour from her mom, it seemed like a no-brainer. I support my wife on this. I work from home, so I can work anywhere. Living up here is temporary, and I’ll get back to my heat pump and air conditioning in the summer. Until then, I have to figure out just how to heat our home without spending a fortune. With the help of some wonderful neighbors, I learned the answer. Make sure your home is insulated. With no drafts, it’s easy to control the temperature. This is our third winter here. Air filtration changes things
I don’t prefer to make big statements because they usually backfire. Occasionally, I can entirely overstate something for being just miraculous. It wasn’t. That’s why I hesitate a bit when describing how much better our indoor air is thanks to air purification. I appreciate my house’s air now! That wasn’t the case for a long time. What I didn’t realize was that the HVAC knew the answers all along. My concern was that our apartment smelled bad, with airborne odors. This happens when there’s a house full of boys, dogs, a cat and other sources of odors. Our HVAC system recycled those odors. Then, there’s the health benefits of good indoor air. After that, our energy bills were lower than ever, but we also enrolled in an HVAC service plan so we didn’t have to worry moving forward. For the few years that we all lived together, the bills for the HVAC maintenance were lower than ever and we never had any serious issues with the HVAC equipment.

I didn’t really need much convincing, all I needed to know was that this system was going to provide proper heating and cooling for a reasonable cost. So I had the new system installed and so far I have been loving it. It was towards the end of the summer when it was installed and the cooling was very impressive. I love that it comes with washable filters that are fairly easy to clean. I honestly can’t wait to see what this system can do when we start getting the freezing temperatures, but I won’t have to use it much now that we are in the fall season. I’m just glad that we’re ready to go with a dependable HVAC system that will keep us perfectly comfortable.
